When to Replace Brake Pads

While your Honda brake pads have been engineered to be durable and long-lasting, you’ll still have to replace them at some point. How long your brake pads will last depends on the type of brake pads your vehicle is equipped with. Honda brake pads will typically need to be replaced every 25,000 to 70,000 miles. It is a good idea to consult our owner’s manual to find a recommendation for your specific Honda model. Keeping up to date with your Honda maintenance schedule is the easiest way to make sure that your brake pads are always in top condition. A good rule-of-thumb is to have your Honda brake pads inspected whenever you bring your vehicle in for an oil change service.

How to Check Brake Pad Thickness

When new, your Honda brake pads are 8 to 12 mm thick. You should still have plenty of stopping power if your brake pads are 6.4 mm thick, but once they wear down to 3.2 mm, you will need to have them replaced as soon as possible to avoid potential brake failure. You can visually inspect the brake pads on your own, although we recommend that you leave this job to the professionals to ensure your safety on Manahawkin-area roads. Worn brake pads can cause a grinding sound when braking. Your car may also start to shake when the brakes are applied, indicating that the brake pads and/or rotor should be replaced. If you find that you need to inspect the brake pads and can’t get to our Toms River Service Center, follow these steps to learn how to check brake pad thickness:

  1. Park your car on a level road.
  2. Use a jack to slowly lift the side of your car you want to examine. Your owner’s manual will have information on where to place the jack.
  3. Use a lug wrench to loosen and remove the bolts on the wheel.
  4. Carefully remove the wheel to expose the brake rotor and caliper which houses the brake pad.
  5. Through the hole in the caliper you will see both the inboard pad (or inside pad) and outboard pad (or outer pad).
  6. Measure the thickness levels of your brake pads with a brake measuring gauge, Vernier caliper, or compass.

What Are the Factors that Can Affect Brake LIfe?

Some of the factors that can cause your brakes to wear out faster than average, include:

  • Driving Habits: Since brake pads work by friction, the heat that this produces causes the pads to wear down over time. By riding the brakes, or braking hard, the pads will wear down faster, and you may need to replace them sooner than expected.
  • Where You Drive: If you do most of your driving on Berkeley-area streets where you’ll encounter traffic, stop signs, and signal lights, you’ll have to apply the brakes more often than if you do most of your driving out on I-195.
  • Brake Pad Composition: Though they cost more, carbon-ceramic brake pads tend to last longer than metallic pads. Your owner’s manual will have information on the type of brake pads recommended for your Honda model.
