IIHS Safety Ratings

The 2017 Honda Accord earned the top overall safety rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2017* with the best score of “Good” in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats test. It also received the best score of “Superior” for front crash prevention and “Average” for headlights. The Hyundai Sonata earned the second-best recognition of Top Safety Pick, coming in below the Accord in key areas, such as a “Poor” score for the headlights test.

Standard Features

The base models on both of these midsize sedans includes standard features like Bluetooth® connectivity, 16-inch alloy wheels, power windows and door locks, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel; both also supply you with split folding rear seats to allow for extra cargo room for longer items. Unlike the Sonata, however, the Accord also comes standard with the premium comfort of dual-zone automatic climate control and advanced tech features like a 7.7-inch full-color display screen and a rearview camera.

Performance Capabilities

While the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata both come with standard a 2.4L four-cylinder engine that makes 185 hp, the Accord’s four-cylinder engine produces 181 lb-ft of torque while the Sonata’s only makes 178 lb-ft of torque. The Accord can also be fitted with a 3.5L V6 engine that generates a very spirited 278 hp. The most powerful Sonata engine, by contrast, is a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four that sadly makes only 245 hp. Also worth noting is the Honda Accord is offered with a sport-tuned suspension on both the four-cylinder and V6 engines, while the Sonata only gets a sport-tuned suspension on models with the turbocharged engine.
